The tree forms a regular conical shape with the higher branches ascending and lower branches either level or drooping; it can reach 130ft (40m).
The light green needles are short and prickly protruding on all sides of the shoot. The cones are long and cigar shaped with rounded scales and they hang down.
It produces a high yield of good quality timber for building work. It is also suitable for paper pulp as the wood is composed of long fibres that bind together well.
