Common Osier

Salix viminalis

Like most willow trees, common Osier likes to grow in wet, boggy areas. Osier is predominantly an ornamental willow as the young shoots are a very attractive yellow and the leaves thin and long.

Osier was traditionally used in basket weaving as its branches are very long, straight and flexible, so most Osier trees in the country were regularly coppiced at the base. Without coppicing, Osier can reach 19ft (6m).
