Gorse grows throughout the UK on light soils and can fix nitrogen in the soil for other plants and trees; it is therefore often planted to improve poor soils for other species. Gorse has attractive, yellow flowers for much of the year and is a common feature of our countryside rarely exceeding 2m in height. Gorse is also planted on golf courses because its spiny, impenetrable folliage provides suitable punishment for wayward golf shots. For a more forgiving, softer shrub you could consider broom.
