The Bräcke planter can be mounted on an excavator or a harvester. In UK conditions it is considered that an excavator is the best option as this provides the flexibility to carry out drainage works using the same base machine.
An excavator of 13 tonnes or above is required; an ideal weight is around 16-18 tonnes. A long reach is not required - an 8 metre reach is generally sufficient. A short dipper arm (2.5m) provides better control over the planter's movements. The machine should be protected to forestry standards. It is recommended that 800mm tracks are fitted. A high under-carriage is not a necessity but has been found to be useful in maintaining productivity.
The planter is powered by the hydraulic circuit and requires a flow of 115 litres per minute at a pressure of 100 bar; this is generally available from the hammer circuit.
