The Hornbeam tree (Carpinus Betulus) is a tough and long-lived native broadleaf tree valued for its adaptability and the dense year-round cover it provides. Notably tolerant of shade, high winds, coastal sea winds, and heavy clay or wet soils, Hornbeam trees are a practical choice for sites where many other broadleaf trees struggle to establish. Oval, pleated leaves with finely toothed edges turn a rich golden yellow in autumn and hold through winter, providing important shelter and cover for wildlife. A moderately slow-growing tree, mature Hornbeam trees can reach up to 30m in height and are capable of living for several centuries.

Like beech, Hornbeam trees retain their leaves through winter when used as a hedge, providing year-round shelter, screening, and nesting habitat for birds and small mammals.

With exceptionally hard and durable timber, Hornbeam trees are well suited to coppicing and long-term wood production, adding further practical value to an already versatile broadleaf species.
