  • Product Description

Common Osier (Salix viminalis), often known as Willow, is a strong, quickly growing native shrub that thrives in damp or wet conditions in rural areas. It is very diverse, as it can grow in wetlands, coastal regions, and chalk soils. In April, the young stems become yellow, and a variety of insects are drawn to the yellow-green catkins. The Common Osier is most recognised for providing stems for basketry, but it has gained popularity recently as the plant used to create living willow sculptures. Because of its capacity to absorb heavy metals, it is beneficial to the environment and is used in the clean up of contaminated and polluted areas.

Common Osier can also be planted to create small-scale water treatment systems. Waste water runs through willow beds, which purify it so that it can be recycled and reused. Growing at a rate of roughly one metre a year, Common Osier are currently planted commercially for biofuel, while historically they were mostly used for boundaries and basket weaving. It also has medical benefits with Aspirin's active component, salicylic acid, being extracted from its bark. Common Osier also attracts unique wildlife such as the Herald Moth, Lackey Moth as well as being one of the earliest suppliers of pollen for bees.
