Blackthorn Hedging Plant (Prunus Spinosa)

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a hardy native hedging plant, valued for its dense, thorny growth and long history in British hedgerows. Tolerant of sandy, clay and most other soil types, Blackthorn withstands dry spells that many hedge plants cannot and grows best in a sunny position, doing poorly in deep shade. Clusters of white blossom appear in March, ahead of the leaves, providing an early nectar source for bees, and are followed by small blue black fruits called sloes in autumn. Growing at a rate of around 40 to 60cm a year, Blackthorn quickly forms a dense, impenetrable hedge suited to most soil types except heavy waterlogged ground.

Blackthorn's dense, prickly growth makes it one of the most effective natural security hedges available, while also offering excellent nesting cover for birds and other wildlife.
