Small and thornless, alder buckthorn trees grow along riverbanks, in heathlands, and in moist woodlands. It is found in Wales and England, but it is rare. Late spring brings clusters of pale green blossoms, and fall brings bunches of red berries that mature to a purple-black hue. The Brimstone butterfly's primary feeding plants are purging buckthorn and alder.

Alder buckthorn bears clusters of tiny yellow flowers, which are followed by crimson berries that turn black when they ripen.
It is an Ideal tree for planting on crofts, woods, gardens and also makes for great hedging.
