The Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) is a native British broadleaf tree best known for its distinctive quivering foliage, which shimmers in the lightest breeze and turns a vibrant yellow in autumn. One of the fastest growing native broadleaf trees in the UK, Aspen trees are a practical choice for screening, woodland creation, and large-scale planting schemes where rapid establishment is a priority. Tolerant of wet, waterlogged, coastal, and exposed conditions, Aspen trees establish well across a wide range of challenging sites. Mature trees can reach up to 20m in height, and the species reproduces naturally through both seed and root suckering, supporting long-term natural regeneration.

For conservation and biodiversity planting, Aspen trees offer strong ecological value, providing specialist habitat for insects including the aspen hoverfly and nesting cavities for birds such as woodpeckers.

A species of conservation significance in the Scottish Highlands, Aspen trees are a meaningful choice for native woodland restoration and grant-funded reforestation projects. As cell-grown saplings, these trees can be planted all year round with the right care.

Supplied at 20-40cm, trees may arrive bare or with browning leaves depending on the season, which is completely normal and does not affect establishment.
