The Downy Birch tree (Betula Pubescens) is a native broadleaf birch tree found throughout the UK and one of the most adaptable and ecologically valuable birch species available. More upright in form than silver birch, with grey-white bark and an elegant drooping canopy, Downy Birch trees grow to 30 metres in height and thrive on damper soils than silver birch, tolerating peat bogs, clay, and wet ground. Capable of establishing at higher elevations and further north than most other broadleaf species, Downy Birch is an excellent pioneer tree for challenging upland sites. Male and female catkins appear on the same tree from April, providing an early seasonal display and important early pollen source.

Capable of growing on ground where many broadleaf trees fail to establish, Downy Birch trees are a strong choice for wet, upland, and exposed sites where site conditions are demanding.

With strong wildlife credentials, Downy Birch trees support a wide range of insects and woodland birds, making them a valuable addition to any conservation or biodiversity planting scheme.
