The Evergreen Oak tree (Quercus Ilex), also known as holm oak, is a broadleaf oak tree originating from the Eastern Mediterranean that has been well established in the UK since the 1500s. Unlike other oak trees, the Evergreen Oak retains its dark, leathery leaves throughout the year, developing a large, rounded crown that can reach 20 metres in height. Evergreen Oak trees typically live for several centuries, with some exceptional specimens known to survive well over 1,000 years. Young leaves emerge with a spiny, holly-like appearance and pale hairs on the underside before maturing to smooth, dark green. Tolerant of most well-drained soils, shade, and air pollution, Evergreen Oak trees are well suited to urban environments including city parks, estate planting, and street schemes.

Resistant to salt spray and regularly planted as a windbreak in coastal areas, Evergreen Oak trees are a practical choice for exposed sites where other oak species may struggle.

Unlike deciduous oaks, the Evergreen Oak retains its canopy through winter, providing year-round shelter for birds and producing acorns that attract jays and other wildlife in autumn.
