The Green Beech tree (Fagus Sylvatica) is one of Britain's most iconic native broadleaf trees, widely regarded as one of the finest green beech trees for formal hedging and large-scale landscape planting. Young lime-green leaves with soft, silky hairs emerge alongside small green flowers in early spring, deepening in colour through summer before turning a rich golden and russet in autumn. Beech nuts develop in prickly seed cases in autumn and provide an important food source for birds, squirrels, and small mammals. Green Beech trees prefer moist but well-drained soil, tolerate both acidic and alkaline conditions, and grow well in full sun or partial shade. Left unmanaged, mature Green Beech trees can reach more than 40m in height.

As a hedging plant, Green Beech is particularly valued for retaining its brown leaves through winter when clipped, making it one of the most popular choices for beech hedging in the UK and providing dense, year-round privacy and shelter that few other deciduous species can match.

Growing at a reliable rate of 30 to 60cm per year and tolerating coastal, inland, and exposed sites, Green Beech trees are a low-maintenance and versatile choice suited to a wide range of garden and landscape settings.
