The Silver Birch tree (Betula Pendula), sometimes known as the Lady of the Woods, is one of Britain's most recognisable native broadleaf trees. Instantly identifiable by its striking silver-white bark and elegant drooping branches, this fast-growing birch tree thrives across a wide range of soils and conditions, from dry woodlands and heaths to exposed upland sites. Light green leaves turn a soft golden yellow in autumn, while male and female catkins appear from April to May. Mature Silver Birch trees can reach up to 25m in height, forming a light, open canopy that suits both large gardens and open landscape planting schemes.

For wildlife and biodiversity planting, Silver Birch trees offer strong ecological value, providing nesting sites for woodpeckers and other hole-nesting birds and food for seed-eating birds including siskins, greenfinches, and redpolls.

With year-round interest from its distinctive silver-white bark and a light canopy that allows understorey planting beneath, Silver Birch trees are a versatile choice as specimen trees in gardens, parklands, and open landscape planting schemes.
