  • Product Description

Sorbus aria, commonly known as Whitebeam is a beautiful yet resilient tree. It grows well on chalk, dry limestone, and acidic soils. It blooms throughout the year, beginning in late spring, round flat clusters of creamy white blooms emerge, which by summer's end turn into shiny green berries. These bring in a variety of garden birds and turn red in September. The berries complement the foliage well when they're still green, and they're a great accent to a floral arrangement. With their stiff, well-formed leaves that point slightly upward to reveal their undersides, the foliage produces a moving silver line that moves with the breeze.

It is a well loved tree within the UK, and in the wild, it is typically found in chalky soils and is extremely drought resistant.

Although it prefers chalky soil, it can also survive in alkaline soil and in most locations with drainage. All around a very useful tree, they are completely hardy and happy near the sea as well as in exposed, windy settings. It does develop more quickly on fertile soil, like most trees, so when planting, it's always a good idea to throw in plenty of compost or fertiliser. A mature whitebeam tree can grow to a height of 15 metres, or 50 feet. It does so rather quickly, taking 30 to 40 years to reach its maximum height.
