Crack Willow (Salix fragilis)

Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Crack Willows (Salix Fragilis) are widely distributed throughout the United Kingdom. It is frequently planted to stabilise river banks and can be seen growing alongside streams, lakes, and other bodies of water .Crack Willow trees can also thrive in coastal areas as they are resistant to sea air. They prefer being in direct sunlight instead of shaded areas. Its extensive roots give structure and prevent soil erosion, and it thrives in moist soils. The twigs are yellow-brown, lustrous, slender, and flexible, while the bark is dark brown and becomes deeply split with age. The Crack Willow is easily pollarded, just like the majority of willow trees. If left in the ground, the twigs snap off readily, giving rise to the name Crack Willow. If left, they will begin to establish roots and form another tree.

In terms of wildlife the Crack Willow supports a variety of different insects and animals, such as the red underwing, eyed hawk-moth, and puss moth. Birds can use the branches as suitable places to nest and sleep, and bees and other insects can obtain early nectar and pollen from the catkins.
