Darwin's Barberry (Berberis darwinii) is a dense, evergreen berberis prized as a flowering hedge plant and specimen shrub for year round structure and colour. Native to Chile and Patagonia, Darwin's Barberry has small, spiny, holly-like leaves and produces masses of rich orange flowers, tinged red in bud, through mid and late spring, sometimes flowering again in autumn. These are followed by blue black berries that ripen in autumn, adding further seasonal interest. Tolerant of coastal exposure and most well drained soils, Darwin's Barberry grows well in full sun or partial shade and reaches around 3 metres in height if left unchecked.

As a hedging plant, Darwin's Barberry forms a dense, spiny barrier that deters intruders while remaining attractive throughout the year.

Bees are drawn to the spring blossom and birds to the autumn berries, making Darwin's Barberry a valuable hedge plant for pollinators and garden wildlife alike.
