Grand Fir Tree (Abies Grandis)

Grand Fir (Abies grandis) is a fast growing evergreen conifer tree, among the tallest of the fir trees and increasingly popular for forest diversification on upland sites across the UK. Preferring well drained soils, Grand Fir does not tolerate waterlogged ground, but is more shade tolerant than many other conifers, making it well suited to underplanting and mixed woodland schemes. Glossy, dark green needles release a distinctive citrus scent when crushed, and the tree's dense, pyramidal habit provides valuable shelter for birds and other wildlife. Left to mature, Grand Fir can reach up to 70 metres in height, making it one of the largest conifer trees suited to UK growing conditions.

More shade tolerant than species such as Noble Fir, Grand Fir is well suited to continuous cover forestry and mixed conifer planting schemes.
