Pinus pinaster, commonly known as maritime pine, is a bold and rugged evergreen tree valued for its long, dark green needles and distinctive, irregular crown. Its striking, architectural form brings a touch of Mediterranean character to the garden, making it an eye-catching and enduring choice.

Rather than flowers, maritime pine produces large, woody cones and dense foliage that provide shelter for birds and other wildlife. It is particularly well known for its toughness, thriving in poor, sandy soils and coastal conditions, and showing excellent tolerance to wind and salt-laden air.

Naturally growing into a tall, open tree, Pinus pinaster is best suited to larger gardens or exposed landscapes where it has space to develop. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny position and can be planted year-round in suitable conditions. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and will grow into an impressive specimen, reaching heights of up to 20–30 metres.
