Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea, commonly known as purple Japanese barberry, is a vibrant deciduous shrub loved for its rich burgundy-purple foliage that adds striking colour throughout the growing season. In spring, it produces small, delicate yellow flowers that contrast beautifully against the dark leaves, making it a wonderful addition to any garden or a unique living gift.

As the seasons progress, the shrub develops bright red berries that are highly attractive to birds, while its dense, thorny branches provide valuable shelter for wildlife. Tough and adaptable, it is well suited to a variety of conditions and can tolerate exposed positions better than many ornamental shrubs.

Naturally forming a compact, bushy shape, Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea is perfect for smaller gardens, borders, or hedging. It thrives in most well-drained soils and can be planted at any time of the year. Easy to maintain, it responds well to pruning, allowing it to be shaped as desired, and typically grows to around 1.5–2 metres in height.
