The Rowan tree (Sorbus Aucuparia), also known as the mountain ash, is a slender native broadleaf tree with graceful, upward-facing branches and smooth silvery-grey bark. Well suited to smaller gardens as a specimen tree, Rowan trees also perform well in exposed locations, growing happily at altitude and in acidic, well-drained soils. Clusters of creamy-white flowers attract bees and pollinators in spring, followed by striking scarlet berries in autumn that provide a vital food source for small birds. Fern-like leaves turn orange-red in autumn, adding strong seasonal colour throughout the year. Rowan trees are frost resilient, grow 20-40cm each year, and can reach up to 17m in height.

Suitable for both exposed and sheltered sites, Rowan trees also work well as screening trees, making them a versatile choice for gardens and landscaping schemes of any size.

As a compact, hardy native species that performs well on poor and acidic soils, Rowan trees are a practical choice for conservation planting, community woodland schemes, and challenging upland sites where other species may struggle.
