Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) is a native hedging plant best known for its striking autumn colour, when deep green leaves turn a fiery scarlet and vivid pink seed capsules split open to reveal bright orange fruits. Insignificant summer flowers are followed by this display of pink and orange fruit, which often remains on the branches long after the leaves have fallen, extending seasonal interest well into winter. Spindle grows well in full sun and tolerates some shade, thriving in most soil types as long as they are free draining, and suits exposed, sheltered, inland and coastal sites alike. Growing at a rate of around 30 to 60cm a year, Spindle can reach up to 9 metres in height if left unmanaged.

As a hedge plant, Spindle works well in mixed native hedgerows, adding vivid colour that few other UK hedging species can match through autumn and winter.

Resilient to cold and adaptable to damp spots, Spindle is a hardy hedging plant suited to a wide range of garden and landscape settings.
