Pinus pinea, commonly known as the stone pine or umbrella pine, is a distinctive evergreen tree admired for its unique, broad, umbrella-shaped crown and long, soft green needles. Its striking silhouette brings a Mediterranean feel to the garden, making it a standout feature and a memorable garden gift.

Rather than flowering displays, the stone pine produces large cones that contain edible pine nuts, adding both ornamental and practical interest. Its canopy also provides shelter for birds and wildlife. A resilient species, it is particularly well suited to dry, sunny conditions and can tolerate coastal exposure, though it prefers protection from severe frost when young.

Naturally developing into a tall tree with a wide, spreading crown, Pinus pinea is best suited to larger gardens or open landscapes where it has room to mature. It thrives in well-drained soils, especially sandy or light soils, and can be planted throughout the year in suitable conditions. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and can eventually reach heights of around 12–20 metres.
