Western Red Cedar Hedging Tree (Thuja Plicata)

Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is a fast growing evergreen conifer, valued as a hedging tree and for its rich, reddish brown bark and dense, scale-like foliage. Shade tolerant and adaptable, Western Red Cedar establishes well even beneath other trees, and prefers damper soils while tolerating a wide range of conditions, including normal, chalk and clay soils. Crushed foliage releases a distinctive pineapple like scent, adding a pleasant sensory element to any garden or boundary planting. Growing at a rate of around 30 to 60cm a year, Western Red Cedar can reach up to 70 metres in its native range, though UK specimens are typically smaller, particularly when grown as a hedge.
