Product Description
The southernmost limit of Betula nana's range is found in Scottish mountains, where it grows above 300 metres. Primarily an Arctic tundra plant, it can be found in Canada, Iceland, and Greenland. It can grow above two thousand metres in the Alps! It's also a native plant in the UK, though getting harder to find.
The dwarf birch prefers acidic, well-drained soil that receives full light. It looks like a birch, with tiny, serrated leaves, but it actually grows more like a little shrub. In fall, the leaves become red. Dwarf birch has adapted to its cold harsh climate by channelling all its annual growth into its leaves and roots. This allows it to thrive in harsh climates but as a result produces no wood. Hence why it is so short in height.
