Spindle (Euonymus europaeus)

Great for attracting wildlife with its flowers and fruits, Spindle attracts pollinators with its pink and orange fruits. Native to most of Europe, spindle is most frequently found around the edges of forests, in hedges, scrub, and hedgerows. It is less common in Scotland and grows well in chalky soils.

The size of each plant is between 15 – 50cm in height from the root plug.

  • Product Description

Euonymus europaeus, or spindle, is well-known for its breathtaking autumn foliage, which changes from a deep green to a brilliant scarlet as the vivid pink capsules burst open to expose bright orange fruits. This hedge plant looks great in full sun, but it can also withstand some shadow, and the fruits are frequently kept far into the winter months, even after the leaves have fallen. When its dark green leaves turn a fiery scarlet in the autumn and winter, this plant truly shines. Pretty, orange-pink, winged fruit appears after insignificant summer flowers and hangs around long after the leaves have gone.

It's also lovely as a winter border planted with shrubs or early-flowering bulbs for winter interest.  While it can withstand coastal locations and slightly damp spots, Spindle hedging thrives in typical soil conditions and circumstances. At an average annual growth rate of roughly 45 cm, Euonymus europaeus grows.
